My main news is that the book, NATIVE
AMERICAN SONGS
from THURLOW LIEURANCE, has just been published in a
limited edition. Based on the songs Mr. Lieurance
collected in the early 1900's and turned into art
songs, the current book has been adapted for Indian
flute by myself and Daley Thomas, who transcribed them
on his music computer and simultaneously created a CD
on synthesizer. Self-published, the books are
advertised in INAFA, the international Native Flute
journal.
A recital of the Lieurance art songs will be performed
with piano accompaniment on October 11, at White
Concert Hall, Washburn U., by faculty member Ivalah
Randalls, soprano. I will assist by introducing some
of the songs on Indian flute, in a style to
approximate how the composer first heard them almost a
century ago.
I was privileged to perform a program of these old
songs at the April NLAPW Biennial in Denver and to
sell my CDs, "Coyote Songs and Tales". Also, I
participated in the Memorial Service, playing "Amazing
Grace" just before the names of deceased members were
read. It was a moving experience.
