Naomi Patterson
Naomi Patterson is a retired Clinical Psychologist who practiced in Colorado and Topeka for a total of nearly 35 years. Her work was primarily with children and their parents. Since 1997 she has written a column for the Topeka Capital Journal which now appears on the 4th Sunday of each month. She has published three books of poetry, titled Living Out Loud, Thinking Out Loud, and For Crying Out Loud. Her third book won the Nelson poetry book award in 2005.
At the 2006 annual convention of the Kansas Authors Club,
Naomi won prizes for her poetry and prose in several different
categories. In 2002, she was awarded their Achievement Award for
the body of her work as well as for state contest prizes she had won
over the previous three years. She recently won four prizes at
the 2006 Pen Woman convention and the annual first prize for a poem on
internet site, Prairie Poetry. This award is determined by a vote
of other poets.
In 2005 she was awarded a poetry fellowship by the Kansas Arts Commission. Through Kansas Authors Club she has been active in the Writers in the Schools program and in this capacity volunteered at the Topeka Lutheran School, teaching writing to students in grades 3 through 8.
In her spare time, Naomi enjoys her family, water exercise and long luxurious massages.
